Rhizome short, without stolon. Culms several to a tuft, 15-40 cm tall, 0.7-1.5 mm thick, trigonous, smooth, bearing spikes on upper 3/4-2/3.
Leaves many, much surpassing culms; 6-15 mm wide; basal sheaths brown or pale-green with brown nerves.
Spikes 4 to 8, single or middle ones occasionally binate or ternate, lowest occasionally branching bearing secondary spikes arising from lower achene bearing utricles. Terminal spike staminate, linear, 1-3 cm long, 1-2 mm wide, pale or pale-brownish. Lateral spikes pistillate, upper ones subfastigiate to contiguous, lowest 1 or 2 spaced, narrowly cylindrical to linear, (2-)3-6 cm long, 3 mm wide, many-flowered. Bracts with short blade, forming loose sheath at base.
Pistillate glumes obovate to oval, ca. 2.5 mm long, membranaceous, light yellowish, obtuse to truncate at apex, green costa forming a mucro or cusp at apex. Utricles longer than glume, suberect, lageniform, 5-6 mm long, obtusely trigonous, light green, finely many-veined, pubescent, contracted at short-stipitate base, weakly constricted at midway portion, beak short, minutely bidentate. Achenes rather tightly enveloped, lageniform, triquetrous, 3-4 mm long, short stipe at base, gradually tapering above to a short column ca. 1 mm long and 0.7 mm across, apex contracted into a cylindrical neck; style slightly thickened at base; stigmas 3, short.
